How to Fix 100% CPU Usage in Windows 10/11

Stop your PC from lagging and make it fast again with these easy steps.

Fix High CPU Usage

Is your computer fan making a loud noise like a jet engine? Does your mouse stop moving when you try to open a website? If you open your Task Manager, you might see your CPU at 100%. This means your computer's "brain" is working too hard.

Don't worry! Your computer is not broken. Usually, it's just a few hidden settings that are making your PC tired. I will show you how to fix it in 3 easy ways.

Step 1: Turn off "SysMain"

This is a small program inside Windows that tries to guess what you want to do. Sometimes it gets confused and uses all your power. Turning it off is safe and makes your PC much faster.

  1. Press Windows + R keys, type services.msc and hit Enter.
  2. Find SysMain in the list.
  3. Right-click it, select Properties, and change it to Disabled.
  4. Click Stop and then OK.

Step 2: Stop Background Apps

Windows runs many apps like Skype or Calculator even when you aren't using them. These take tiny bites of your power. Turning them off stops the lag.

  • Windows 10: Go to Settings > Privacy > Background Apps. Turn the top switch to OFF.
  • Windows 11: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps. Click the dots next to apps you don't use and select "Advanced Options." Set Background Permissions to Never.

Step 3: High Performance Mode

Windows usually tries to save electricity, which can slow down your CPU. We want to tell Windows to focus on SPEED instead.

  1. Type "Edit Power Plan" in your search bar and click it.
  2. Click Power Options at the top.
  3. Choose High Performance.
