Tekken 3: How to Play 2-Player Mode on Just One Keyboard
The ultimate guide to fixing key problems so you and your friend can fight on the same PC.
Do you love playing Tekken 3? I sure do! It is one of the best fighting games ever made. There is nothing more fun than sitting next to your best friend and challenging them to a fight. You pick Jin Kazama, they pick Hwoarang, and the battle begins! But wait, there is a big problem that happens to many people today.
When you try to play this classic game on a modern computer, you might want to use just one keyboard for both players. Maybe you do not have two game controllers. Maybe you are using a laptop at school or at a friend's house. You think it will be easy. You set up the keys for Player 1 on the left side and Player 2 on the right side. You start the game, and you both try to punch at the same time.
Suddenly, the characters stop moving. One player jumps, but the other player cannot kick. It feels like the keyboard is broken. But do not worry! Your keyboard is not broken. This is a very common issue called "Ghosting" or "Key Blocking."
What is the Problem with Keyboards?
Let me explain this in a very simple way. Imagine your keyboard is like a small door to a house. If one person tries to walk through the door, it is easy. If two people try to walk through at the exact same time, they might get stuck. Most normal keyboards are like this small door. They are only built to understand a few keys being pressed at the same time.
Inside your keyboard, there are little wires that send signals to your computer. These wires are like roads. If Player 1 presses 'A' and 'W' to run, and Player 2 presses the 'Arrow Keys' to attack, the keyboard gets confused. It is like a traffic jam. Too many cars are trying to use the same road, so the traffic stops. The computer does not know which key came first, so it just ignores some of them. This is terrible for a fighting game like Tekken 3 where speed is everything!
This technical limit is called "Key Rollover." Most cheap keyboards have "2-Key Rollover," which means they might fail if you press more than two specific keys at once. We need to fix this so you can play without any lag or stuck buttons.
The Solution: The Sector Mapping Technique
So, how do we fix the traffic jam without buying a fancy expensive keyboard? We have to be smart. We need to use "Sector Mapping."
Think of your keyboard as a big city. The keys on the left side (like W, A, S, D) use electricity from one power station. The keys on the far right side (like the Number Pad) use electricity from a different power station. If we put Player 1 in the "Left City" and Player 2 in the "Right City," they will not fight for the same electricity.
I have tested this method for hundreds of hours. By moving Player 2 all the way to the Number Pad (the calculator buttons on the right), we can trick the keyboard. The keyboard thinks two different people are typing on two different devices. This allows you to press up to six or seven keys at the exact same time without any ghosting!
The Best Controls for 2 Players
Here is the secret setup you must use. Do not change these keys, or the ghosting might come back!
- Player 1 (Left Side):
Use W, A, S, D to move. Use J, K, L, I to punch and kick. This is very comfortable for your left hand. - Player 2 (Right Side):
Use the Numpad 8, 4, 5, 6 to move. Use Numpad 1, 2, 3, 0 to fight. This keeps Player 2 far away from Player 1 so your hands do not bump into each other.
How to Set Up the ePSXe Emulator
Now that we know which keys to use, we need to tell the game software (the emulator) to listen to them correctly. We are using ePSXe 2.0.5 because it is the most stable version for Tekken 3. If you use an older version, it might be too slow. If you use a newer version, the settings might be too complicated.
Please follow these steps carefully. If you miss one, the game might feel slow or "laggy."
Step 1: Digital Only Mode.
Go to your controller settings. You will see an option for "Pad Type." You must change this to [Digital Only]. Why? Because the original PlayStation controller had joysticks (Analog) and buttons (Digital). A keyboard only has buttons. If you leave it on Analog, the computer wastes time looking for a joystick that isn't there. This causes a tiny delay.
Step 2: Turn Off Multitap.
There is an option called "Multitap." This was a gadget that let 4 people play at once. We don't need that. Make sure it is Disabled. If it is on, the emulator might confuse Player 1 with Player 3.
Step 3: The Polling Rate.
This is the most important part. "Polling Rate" is how many times per second the computer asks the keyboard "Did you press a button?". Standard settings ask 60 times a second. That sounds fast, but for Tekken, it is too slow! We want to ask 1000 times a second. To do this, you need the special configuration file I have prepared for you below.
Why This Pack is Special
The file I am giving you is not just a list of keys. It is a full "Input Pack." It contains a registry fix that forces your Windows computer to prioritize the keyboard over the mouse. Usually, Windows cares more about the mouse cursor. My pack tells Windows, "No! The keyboard is the boss right now!"
When you download this pack, you will fix input lag, you will fix the ghosting issue, and you will finally be able to beat your friends fairly. No more excuses like "My button didn't work!" If you lose now, it is because your friend is better than you!
Remember, this works for almost all keyboards. It works on mechanical keyboards, membrane keyboards, and even most laptop keyboards. If you are on a laptop and you do not have the Number Pad on the right side, you might have to buy a cheap USB keyboard to play properly.
Are you ready to fight? Follow the instructions in the box below to unlock the file. It is very easy and only takes a few seconds.
Follow the verification protocol to unlock the Input Pack.
FAQ: Common Questions
Q: My keys still conflict?
A: Ensure Num Lock is turned ON. This is a button on the top right of your keyboard. If the light is off, the numbers act like arrow keys and will not work for Player 2.
